ATLANTA, GEORGIA
Benny “BJ” Crane is a dynamic and enthusiastic leader of students, parents, colleagues, and future educators alike. In his 12 years of educational experience, BJ has served as a teacher, varsity head coach, and dean in both the independent and public school settings. He is currently the Middle School Dean of Students and faculty coordinator of single-gender teaching for The Lovett School in Atlanta, GA. In addition to his role of dean, BJ also developed and facilitates his Lovett’s Student Development and Mentoring Program, which specifically helps to enhance the experience of students of color in an independent school setting.
BJ is a committed educator and trainer as he seeks to empower those he works with on a daily basis. In addition to his work in his school, he also serves as the Lead Mentor Teacher/Director of Teacher-Intern Training for Breakthrough Atlanta, a program that increases educational opportunity for middle school students from metro Atlanta public schools and inspires talented high school and college students to pursue careers in education. BJ is also a certified trainer of Habitudes®, training educators, students, and parents across Georgia effective leadership and self-leadership habits and attitudes.
BJ’s leadership at Lovett has influenced virtually every facet student life. He worked with other administrators, faculty, and athletic staff to develop, implement, and facilitate a successful intramural program within his school. BJ enjoys coaching three sports as an extension of his commitment to the development of the whole child and has shared his expertise as a coach presenting at both USA Football and Frank Glazier Football Coaching Clinics. He also serves as a summer workshop leader for middle school deans through Independent School Management, Incorporated (ISM). He holds a Masters in Education from the University of Phoenix and is currently working towards a Doctorate in Educational Leadership with a focus on single-gender teaching.
Whether it is leading his school’s Student Support Teams (SST) or organizing panel discussions on maximizing student success geared towards new parents, BJ is a shining example of Benjamin Franklin’s ideal that “An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.”
