Ensuring Academic and Social-Emotional Success for Boys and Girls

In this dynamic keynote presentation, Dr. Gurian will explore how the minds of boys and girls learn and grow, including brain differences that impact education and social emotional development throughout the lifespan.  He will provide insight into new genetic resources available to schools and families, the impact of environmental and cultural neuro-toxins on the learning brain, best teaching, parenting, counseling, and mentoring practices for both girls and boys, and safe, effective electronics and technology standards for various stages of child development.  

Michael’s presentation will include PET, SPECT, and MRI scans that display brain differences, and he will bring the latest research in his newest books, The Stone Boys (2019), The Minds of Girls (2018), and Saving Our Sons (2017),  focusing on educating, raising, and counseling boys, and educating, raising, and counseling girls.

Two primary topics will be social-emotional development tools for teachers, parents, and others, including ways to help boys open up their emotions in boy-friendly ways, and successes and implications of the digital brain on education and parenting of all children.  As Michael looks at the growing brain through the lens of gender science, he will explore themes on everyone’s mind today, including transgender questions and gender fluidity, what constitutes “toxic masculinity,” girl drama and relational aggression, girls and STEM learning, boys’ empathy development, and brain-based boy-friendly learning strategies.

As Covid 19 continues to create the need for online and hybrid schooling in some areas of the country and world, Michael will provide strategies and insight to help educators and parents create the best possible “education during Covid” for this generation of children.  The Gurian Institute has been conducting action research since the pandemic began, and now provides training and outreach on this topic worldwide.

Michael will also lead two working lunch discussions.  The books that underlie these discussions are Saving Our Sons and The Stone Boys for Saturday and The Minds of Girls for Sunday.  We hope you will read these books ahead of time.  In these working lunches, we will study and strategize regarding violence/suicide prevention, and mental and emotional health in our school communities.

Many of our boys, especially those of color, are falling behind academically and socially.  With training and commitment, dedicated educators can make a difference by utilizing instructional strategies and methods that fit the developmental and learning needs of these youngsters.  Come to this keynote prepared to learn strategies and discuss how to best meet this challenge in your classroom and your school.

Because Mr. Moody has taught and worked with a widely diverse group of boys from all races and socio-economic origins, he has both culturally sensitive and universally applicable wisdom on masculine and male development.  This workshop will include strategies, anecdotes, stories, and action plans you can use right away.  Joseph will bring to bear his previous experience working in the juvenile justice system to contextualize his profound sense that change is possible throughout our educational system.

Joseph Moody is an internationally recognized keynote speaker and Assistant Head of Middle School for Student Life at The Lovett School in Atlanta, Georgia, a Gurian Model School.  He has been an educator since graduating from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina in 1994.  Joseph taught and coached in public high schools in Georgia for 16 years, and worked in Juvenile Court, before becoming a Middle School science teacher at The Lovett School in 2010. After three years, Joseph transitioned to the role of Middle School Dean of Student Life for the boys. Outside of his Dean role, Joseph has coached football, wrestling, and track at Lovett.  He has an MS in Psychology and is working towards a PhD in Educational Psychology.

Dr. Gurian’s Sunday keynote focuses on poverty- and trauma-informed classrooms, with a powerful eye towards empathy and resilience-building.  Michael will help teachers and others, including parents, to develop trauma sensitive classrooms and environments across the socioeconomic and school spectrum.  He will discuss the impact trauma has on the brains of children at various ages, and boys and girls specifically.  Participants will learn practical strategies for building strong relationships and attachments with traumatized children, as well as those raised in poverty.

Michael will also tell a bit of his own story.  A product of childhood trauma, he scores a 7 out of 10 on the Adverse Childhood Experiences, ACE survey.  The publication of his newest book, The Stone Boys, made public some of his own trauma.  We hope you will read The Stone Boys ahead of time for a deep dive into boys’ potential trauma-responses in particular.

Featured Speakers and Workshops

Tremaine-CANTEEN
Helping Boys and Girls in Poverty Thrive Through Virtual Learning, with Dr. Tremaine Canteen, Principal of the Virtual Academy in the Cumberland County School District, and a Gurian Certified Trainer. The needs of children raised in poverty are profound and sometimes not served in traditional settings.  Virtual academies, however, are showing great promise for leveling playing and learning fields.  This session will give participants a toolbox full of practical strategies that grow from ensuring the needs of both boys and girls in virtual academy settings.  Dr. Tremaine Canteen is the Principal of The Cumberland Virtual Academy in the Cumberland County School District in Fayetteville, North Carolina, with over 16 years of experience in education.  Dr. Canteen was selected to serve as the Teacher of the Year in 2007 and 2012. In 2017, she served as Cumberland County Schools’ Assistant Principal of the Year. Dr. Canteen believes that education is still the great equalizer, and virtual education is an important choice.

The Human Brain:  Setting the Stage, with Eva Dwight, M.Ed, and Dr. Michael Gurian. Body, mind, and soul are not three isolated systems.  Intricately woven together, they give us the human experience.  In our culture now, our children’s bodies, minds, and souls are experiencing significant stress.  This opening session of the conference will link our weekend of training to the deep issues of our time in schools and neighborhoods, and provide a primer on the amazing human brain–both its natural resilience and its potential fragility.

Boys and Girls Learn Differently – Two-Part Strategies Session, with Eva Dwight, M.Ed., Gurian Institute Program Director.  This two-part session will give participants a tool box full of practical strategies that can be adapted for use in any classroom to increase teacher effectiveness and make sure the needs of both boys and girls are being met. The workshops will model the strategies for both online and in-person classroom delivery.  This two-part session is a requirement for applicants for Gurian Institute Trainer Certification and includes specific innovations for coeducational classrooms and for single sex classrooms and academies.

Self-Care for Teachers and Parents During Crisis and Trauma, including Strategies to Use with Children, with Eva Dwight, M.Ed.  Brain science can give us profound and practical insight into how to help ourselves as adults with self-care, which is absolutely essential during times of crisis and  trauma.  The same science holds powerful clues and provides best practices for setting kids up for success in both learning and social-emotional development during times of crisis.  In this workshop, Gurian Master Trainer and Program Director Eva Dwight brings more than three decades of school- and parent-coaching experience to a solution-oriented hour of best practices.

The Digital Girl:  What Teachers and Parents Need to Know about Tech Use in Girls’ Development, with Eva Dwight, M.Ed. This workshop will focus on how to help schools, teachers, tweens, and teen girls use tech most effectively and safely.  Overuse of social media and tech is a national problem, yet, tech is here to stay, especially in the Covid era.  Limiting screen time–which is necessary and important–is not the whole story.  Especially with the stress our girls are under constantly today, this workshop focuses on tech use as a positive and negative stressor.  Eva Dwight provides tools, strategies, and real-time conversations to have with girls as parents and teachers help them navigate their digital world.

Engaging, Motivating, and Managing Boys and Girls in the Standards-Driven Classroom, Dr. Lakeva S. Barnes, Gurian Master Trainer and Gifted Differentiation Coach at Sycamore Elementary School in Collierville, TN. With the multitude of demands placed on teachers to manage large class sizes, plan standard-aligned instruction, and improve student growth-measures, many teachers are burning out–they are just finding it too difficult to balance their work load. This session will address best practices for how to engage, motivate, and manage boys and girls through novelty, a token economy, and August to May routines.  These practices and this session help teachers reduce inappropriate classroom behaviors and maximize instructional time while improving student achievement.  Dr. Barnes will share her real-world situations and solutions that have impacted students’ motivation and the teacher’s, including her own, ability to manage some of the worst student behaviors.

Communicating with Parents of Boys about their Behavior, Discipline, & Achievement, Dr. Lakeva S. Barnes.  Communicating with parents about boys’ behavior, discipline, and achievement can be difficult for educators and parents. Parents can get defensive when called to meet with school officials because many times it is not their first experience with hearing about issues their child(ren) may be having in school. Sometimes educators are anxious about the thought of communicating their concerns about male students because of past experiences with challenging parents. This session will provide educators with tools for conducting positive and effective parent-teacher conferences and meetings regarding the behavior, discipline, and achievement of male students. Dr. Barnes will share real experiences and methods used to conduct positive and effective meetings with difficult parents.

Why Did You Do That? I…Uh…Don’t Know! with Joseph Moody, M.A., Assistant Head of Middle School for Student Life at the Lovett School, Atlanta, GA, a Gurian Model School.  Students must deal with discipline, student communities, peer groups, and personal relationships with teachers, while simultaneously coping with the physical and emotional changes they experience during puberty and adolescence.  Their lives are in turmoil, and they need our help understanding who they are and what they are doing.  In this workshop, Joseph will outline evidence-based strategies that improve the student-teacher-administrative relationship from a brain-based perspective.  He will further explore factors that impact behavior, and ways to both set measurable goals for students and help them become leaders in school culture, even through distress.  Joseph will also provide strategies you can use to increase your visibility in the twin roles of advocate and disciplinarian.

Certificates of Participation

Upon request, participants who complete the two days of training will receive a Certificate of Participant for 14 hours; participants who also complete Monday morning’s certification training will receive 17 hours.

Learning and Training Objectives

Describe how the field of gender neuroscience is altering what you know about the psychology and education of children and adolescents.

Discuss specific needs and issues of boys and girls from birth to adulthood, including analysis of the gender spectrum, with focus on both academics and social-emotional development.

Assess how generally institutionalized educational, counseling, and parenting models do or do not fill the specific developmental needs of girls and boys.

Identify new logic models and strategies for motivation, learning, and behavioral intervention.

Summarize key stressors and social-emotional factors that differ between girls and boys.

Demonstrate new strategies for learning, counseling, and assessment, including strategies for working with highly sensitive girls and boys.

Implement new strategies and practical tools beyond the training institute, in your own curricular areas and environments.

Inspiring Communities to Invigorate Healthy Fathering with Marion Hill, Program Coordinator, City of Phoenix Birth to Five Program, Gurian Certified Trainer, and Founder of the Greater Phoenix Urban League M.A.N.C.A.V.E. Fatherhood Program.  A youth football coach, mentor, and child advocate, Marion Hill has worked on issues of fatherhood and male involvement throughout his professional life.  He currently serves as an administrator for Head Start and a Gurian Certified Trainer with the Greater Phoenix Urban League.  Dynamic, visionary, and deeply committed to giving back, Marion is the founder of M.A.N.C.A.V.E. (Men All Need to be Caring Actively-Engaged and Encouraged), an innovative program designed to encourage fathers and male role models to actively engage in children’s growth and development.  As he tells his own powerful story, Marion will utilize anecdotes from his two decades of work in this field, provide success strategies for helping boys and girls in under-resourced neighborhoods, and reveal innovations for engaging fathers deeply in children’s lives.

Best Practices for Working with Learning-Different Students, with Shirleen Lombard, M.S., Educational Director of the Forge School and a Gurian Certified Trainer, and Josh Nordean, M.S., Clinical Director of The Forge School and a Gurian Certified Trainer.   The Forge School for Boys is a therapeutic boarding school, becoming a Gurian Institute Model School this year, that specializes in working with learning different boys and boys who present with behavioral issues.  The Forge School works with boys on the ASD spectrum, boys with ADD/ADHD, boys with sensory integration difficulties, boys in trauma, and boys diagnosed as behavioral challenges in mainstream schools.  Josh, Shirleen, and the Forge school utilize a holistic model that they will share in this workshop, one that is brain-based and uses boy-focused strategies.  Be prepared to explore exciting ways to get challenging and “difficult” boys in sync with the mission and values of your classroom and community.  

The Power of Single Sex Classrooms and Cultures, with Amy Coe, M.A., Assistant Dean of Academics, Army and Navy Academy, and Gurian Certified Trainer.  Army and Navy Academy, a boys only high school, is a Gurian Institute Model School.  This workshop is designed for teachers, administrators, counselors, and all those interested in developing a deeper understanding of what works in single sex school cultures, and why.  The workshop is divided into three sections: useful brain-based sex differences based on Michael Gurian’s work; practical classroom strategies for teacher and student mentoring of boys and girls; and strategies to nurture the nature of boys and girls in single sex school “emotional” cultures (the hidden worlds of both boys and girls).
