Betsy Hoke

EVERGREEN, COLORADO

Betsy Hoke is a Master Trainer for the Gurian Institute and an Education Consultant working with private, public and charter schools across the country and abroad.

A Colorado teacher and administrator for 39 years, she joined the Gurian Institute’s training staff in 2006. After graduating from DePauw University in English and Secondary Education, she completed Montessori early childhood teaching certification in London, England.  Betsy taught and administrated at schools in Colorado Springs and Littleton before moving to Evergreen, Colorado.

As the Head of School at Montessori School of Evergreen for 29 years, she expanded the program from a small preschool to a school of 300 students ages 2 through middle school while continuing to teach for many years at the preschool/kindergarten level. She is currently an instructor at Montessori Education Center of the Rockies, teaching Montessori Philosophy and Classroom Leadership to future Montessori teachers at the early childhood level. Ms. Hoke began instructing parenting classes and classroom management courses in 1982.  She has presented at national and international conferences on a variety of topics.

Upon leaving her position as Head of School, she expanded her Gurian trainings as well as her work in the fields of professional development for teachers and parent seminars.  Betsy is committed to providing adults with the inspiration and knowledge to best support children.  She is especially interested in nurturing the spirit of boys in schools, believing that schools need to better accommodate the learning styles of boys. After her workshops, she has observed the benefit of the implementation of brain-based gender strategies for both sexes.  Betsy shares that humor, inspiration and optimism are key elements in her presentations and she guarantees that participants will have fun as they discover how to teach or parent more effectively.

Betsy serves on the board of AfricAid, a charity that supports education, particularly for girls, in Tanzania.  After her recent first trip to Tanzania, she has committed to spending one month a year volunteering at schools in that country.

Betsy and her husband are parents of a daughter and son in their mid-twenties who have given her further first-hand knowledge of the differences in the brains of males and females!
