Hicxell Wester

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Hicxell Wester is a Los Angeles native and first generation college graduate from the California State University of Los Angeles.  Graduating Magna Cum Laude with a Bachelor’s degree in Child and Family Studies, she has long had an interest in children’s social-emotional wellness and the circumstances that build resiliency in the face of adversity.  She has been a teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District for almost 15 years working with socio-economically disadvantaged youths primarily in their middle school years.

As the eldest child of Mexican Immigrants, Mrs. Wester has lived the experience of many of the Latino students we serve today.  Growing up having to translate for parents at a young age, being siphoned through the school system’s English Language Learner programs, and managing to achieve an education despite social and economic disadvantages.  Her life experience has led Mrs. Wester to take a special interest in Latino students whose personal and individual struggles threaten their academic success and potential.

As a current teacher at one of LAUSD’s only single-sex schools, Mrs. Wester is a strong advocate for building trusting and supportive relationships with students and providing a space for boys and girls in schools to share their struggles and learn strategies for socio-emotional and mental health.
