For nearly a decade, the Gurian Institute and St. John’s Jesuit Academy and High School (SJJ) in Toledo, OH have forged a partnership in learning.  Eight years ago, the Academy became a Gurian Model School.  We are excited to report that the Academy has re-certified as a Model School this year, 2020, having fulfilled the designation obligations.  SJJ is a premier school for boys not just in Ohio, but across the country.

According to superintendent of the Academy, Chris Knight, “We listened to Dr. Gurian’s research and his approach to working with boys’ strengths.  It really made sense to us, so we invested in training for our teachers and put his methods into practice in our classes.”  Mr. Knight continues, “Our affiliation as a Gurian model school has been a difference maker for our students, faculty, and parents.”

St. John’s Jesuit High School was founded in 1898 and re-established in 1965 as a four-year, college preparatory high school for young men. In 2004, St. John’s Jesuit established the Academy for seventh and eighth grade students, and in 2011, a sixth grade was added to the Academy.

As a Gurian Model School, SJJ has multiple GI trainers on site, and practices fidelity to theory and boy-friendly strategies in classes and on the playground.  The Academy reports high standards of teacher and student success, which you can find by visiting the school at www.sjjtitans.org.

The Academy also sponsored a Helping Boys Thrive Summit in 2019 which brought people together from around the country to learn about what boys need and featured the Academy’s in house trainers as speakers, as well as Michael Gurian and the GI team.
