Fatima Coy is a Kindergarten Master Teacher at Friendship Public Charter School in DC. She has taught kindergarten for going on 11 years. This year she received the award of Teacher of the Year at her Friendship Public Charter School campus. Fatima is a graduate of Elizabeth City State University where she received her bachelor’s degree in biology. She received her master’s degree in literacy and reading from Walden University.
As a Kindergarten teacher, she believe that all her students, regardless of their race or economic background, deserves to be in a caring classroom community that teaches how to build positive relationships with each. Her belief that students should have an educator who strives to understand each and every student’s unique need led her to research specifically how boys and girls learn differently. Her mission is to now take this knowledge beyond her classroom to her district as a whole to improve teachers understanding of the whole child using brain research.
Fatima is also the mother of a young boy, which adds another layer of her devotion to improving the knowledge teachers and schools acquire to educate students in an environment that fits their unique needs.
