National speaker and renowned educator Troy Kemp will be our Sunday keynoter at our Winter Institute. Troy is executive director of the National Center for the Development of Boys and the Director of Admissions at the Ron Clark Academy. About Troy’s talks and teaching, Michael Gurian has said, “Troy Kemp is one of the most dynamic speakers I have ever heard. His practical steps for helping all students, and especially boys and boys of color, make his work leading edge at many levels. We are proud to have him at our Winter Institute!”
More about Troy Kemp follows in this blog. We hope you’ll join us in Atlanta on January 24-26 at the Lovett School to learn, network, and share what you know about how boys and girls learn and grow. Our speakers and sessions tackle the most essential elements of education in contemporary schools, including social emotional growth, academic excellence, and digital citizenship. Our work always leans toward practical strategies you can use in your classroom, home, and community the next day!

How do we best motivate students to accomplish difficult tasks? How do we coach and counsel students to rise to every challenge? Join Troy Kemp in the first part of his morning keynote as he motivates and inspires us to expand our playbook inside and outside the classroom.
Troy has spent 25 years in classrooms, coaching, and in administration–nurturing, motivating and empowering young students and athletes. Growing up in a migrant working family, he spent his childhood in public school on Long Island where he witnessed and experienced many of the challenges and tragedies that boys often face in our culture. A powerful speaker and social thinker, he is able to dig deeply into his subjects while remaining always practical and science-based.
Part II of Troy’s keynote focuses on trauma-informed classrooms (Adverse Childhood Experiences, ACE’s). Troy will help teachers and others, including parents, to develop trauma sensitive classrooms and environments across the socioeconomic and school spectrum. He will discuss the impact trauma has on teachers, students, and parents, and how traumatic situations keep the brain in fight/flight mode, causing children to struggle. Participants will learn practical strategies for building strong relationships and attachments with traumatized children.
