From the opening reception to the final session, the Gurian Summer Training Institute soared. We thank you all, whether you attended this year or not, and special thanks to those who came, participated, debated, learned, grew, and took the work home with them to empower and grow their communities.
To all our speakers—Keynote, Troy Kemp; Featured Speaker, Susan Jentzsch; Strategies Trainer, Katey McPherson; Dr. Glynetta Deshon Fletcher, Dr. Lisa Basista, Tim Wright, Amy Coe, and Ethan Segovia—our deepest thanks. You challenged us in so many ways.
To Susan Jentzsch, who organized the event, I want to give a big Brava! You and the team from Army and Navy Academy gave us a rich event to remember. To Army and Navy Academy in Carlsbad, CA, thank you so much! As a Gurian Model School and a host to our Summer training, you have helped change countless lives for the better, and you are much appreciated.
To many others who worked behind the scenes—Amy Coe, Ethan Segovia, Katey McPherson, Jim Callaghan, Gaby, Fletch, Melanie, Mike, and the student video team, as well as other volunteers and friends: thank you for everything you did to make this event a success.
A special thank you also to those individuals who became Certified Trainers during the Training Institute. We welcome you onboard.
Something powerful is happening nationwide. Those of us who are raising and educating children sense how incomplete many of the public themes about boys and girls have become, and we want a social revolution that deepens the gender debate.
We see the positive use of science and brain-based thinking in this deepening process, a kind of thinking that can mesh with the growing needs of communities. At profound levels, we want help raising, educating, and counseling both boys and girls across the gender spectrum.
The Gurian Institute is proud to provide professional development, teacher and staff training, parent keynotes and training, and mental health consulting in these areas. We are a community-based organization serving schools and communities in the grass roots. This is our passion.
As the world shifts, our deep human needs remain largely the same: to learn and grow successfully and purposefully. The science we can shine on issues facing our culture is an evolving “gender lens” that will never become old because it grows and evolves along with the science.
This science, as we saw in Carlsbad, is leading edge work. Its practical and strategic applications immediately affect classrooms, homes, faith communities, workplaces, and other environments. Boys and girls learn and grow differently. To neglect this fact in our systems-creation and environmental growth is to make educational systems that simply cannot serve the diversity of human beings.
Here is a video made by and about high school students for GI’s Summer Institute created by Melanie An and Dr. Glynetta DeShon Fletcher. It features students in the San Diego and Los Angeles areas—teens telling us what we need to hear. We started Saturday morning of the Institute with this video.

We are honored by testimonials like these:
“Wow, I LOVED this conference! Understanding the brains of males and females leads to very positive change in classrooms and communities. Our school is working daily to embed these theories and techniques.”
“Excellent. Powerful. Practical strategies and new systems thinking I can use in my classroom and home tomorrow.”
“This Summer Institute was one of the best. Our school has worked with GI for many years. As we’ve used this material, we’ve seen grades and test scores rise, and behavior among both boys and girls improve.”
“What a powerful and informative weekend. I am energized to take the training back to my school and community.”
“I have been an educator for 32 years. This may well be the best professional development experience of my career—if not the best, then one of the best. It is practical, informative, and has real depth.”
Please contact us at info@gurianinstitute.com with any questions or needs in your community. We would like to bring the Gurian Institute to your part of the world. And please join us for our next Summer Institute.
Thanks again to everyone for a great event!
