“Gender Indifference” is a term I use to talk about the call by some people, most of them not primary scientists in the field, to deny male/female brain difference. These folks travel the country speaking about gender neuroscience without showing brain scans of males and females across the gender spectrum doing the same task. They avoid showing these scans because to show them would mean their case falls apart. What scientists call sexual di-morphism (what is more popularly called “gender difference”) is incontrovertible in brain scans. Wherever I travel to speak, I make sure to show real brain scans.
The false science of the gender indifference exists to advocate for vulnerable LGBTQ populations, and that advocacy is very important, but the folks pushing the false science are doing damage to human systems, damage they do not need to do, including, in the long term, damage to the rights of vulnerable populations. For decades, the Gurian Institute has advocated for all vulnerable populations, from girls in their vulnerabilities, boys in theirs, and LGBTQ populations in theirs, by using real science. Our research shows real gender science much more effective in helping populations than the gender indifferent “male and female are not a big deal,” and “there really aren’t any significant brain differences between the sexes.” Examples of the help sexual dimorphism research can provide appears in studies daily, including this recent study on autism: https://www.jcdr.net/articles/PDF/11407/29767_CE[Ra]_F(P)_PF1(MJ_AP)_PFA(MJ_AP)_PB(MJ_AP)_PN(AP).pdf.
In this video blog, I go deeper into the distinction between “Gender Difference” and “Gender Indifference.” I hope you’ll use the clip in your communities, school board meetings, and local discussions. Thank you for your work on behalf of all our children. –Michael Gurian
Thanks Michael! I actually wanted to write to you today, because a book, published by Gina Rippon (The Gendered Brain: The new neuroscience that shatters the myth of the female brain) has just reached the Danish Press, which had long favored this approach (also at university level), and the debate is heating up. So I was so pleased to see the video blog from you, as it touches on this very subject.
I am very interested in seeing the brain scans – are they available via your online course? So far, I only your books.
Thanks again,
Mette
Hi Mette,
Thanks for writing. If you google male/female brain, you’ll see brain scans from various researchers. It takes a bit of time to click the links.
I’ll try to find Rippon’s book, as well.
Best,
Mike
