The Regis School of the Sacred Heart is Houston’s only all-boys PreK3 through Eighth Grade School. Through a unique mix of challenging academics and the values of the Sacred Heart, Regis—an Independent, Catholic school—empowers boys of all faiths to become lifelong scholars and authentic, compassionate leaders. Founded in 1991, The Regis School of the Sacred Heart serves over 350 boys and young men in its quest to form Scholars and Gentlemen.
The school was originally certified as a Gurian Model School more than fifteen years ago but was very proud to recently host Dr. Gurian for his most recent campus visit, at which he awarded Head of School Steven Turner with a new certification plaque. This came on the heels of several visits from GI staff, who did all-day professional development for the entire faculty to start this school year, followed by days of classroom visits and observations with feedback.
Regis currently has five members of its faculty and leadership team certified as Gurian trainers, with a sixth to be added this summer. The school sends faculty to the Summer Institute annually.
More About Regis
Regis provides a variety of leadership and mentorship opportunities for its students, such as the Big Brother, Little Brother program, where the Middle School boys take responsibility for the younger boys in Early Childhood and Lower School at many school functions. Big Brothers lead by example, serving as mentors and modeling expectations of respect and high moral character. Students in Pre-K3 are introduced to their Fifth Grade Big Brothers and remain with them throughout the next four years.
Other opportunities for the development of leadership and purpose include the Regis Student Ambassador Program, in which middle school boys serve in leadership roles at various events. Students participating in the program provide tours to visiting families during open house functions. In addition, these boys act as greeters and hosts for our special guests during many on-campus gatherings.
Kinesthetic activities and body engagement are hallmarks of Regis practice. Its students have physical education class every day, outdoor recess every day, and a highly attended athletics and after-school enrichment program. Teachers use movement and other GI strategies as a part of their regular pedagogical practice, and accommodate flexible seating and body positions that allow for each individual boy to focus and complete classwork as best suits him. Brain breaks, learning competitions, and a variety of cooperative activities are weaved into daily life.
The Gurian Institute is honored to renew our partnership with Regis and to help them in their continuing journey of boy-centered education and social-emotional growth. Please learn more about Regis at theregisschool.org.
