Earlier in the year, we proudly announced that Army and Navy Academy (ANA) in Carlsbad, CA had become a Gurian Center for Educational Excellence. ANA has continued its work with the Gurian Institute (GI) this summer and fall and GI has completed an Independent Study of the school to be published soon.
Michael Gurian will be speaking to educators and parents at ANA on September 19 and 20. To learn more, check out our Gurian Institute website for ANA and its Center: https://gurianinstitute.com/army-and-navy-academy-ana/. Now here’s more about the school from its new Dean of Academics, Mark Ryan.

A WELCOME FROM THE DEAN
A military boarding school such as ANA offers a wide array of opportunities for boys to develop intellectually, physically, emotionally, psychologically, morally, and socially. A boy’s academic classes are a significant part of an integrated set of experiences that foster development across each of those domains. At ANA, we purposely design each of those integrated experiences using boy-brain science that tells us what techniques best meet boys where they are at developmentally. The ANA faculty are masters at utilizing an array of strategies that help boys learn and achieve at high levels. Approaches such as the use of graphic organizers and visuals, incorporating competition into the learning process, frequent opportunities for the boys to collaborate with peers in their learning, project-based learning, and frequent movement and brain/physical activity breaks all help make the ANA classroom a very unique and successful place for boys to learn.
The academic program at ANA prepares boys for entry and success in highly competitive colleges and universities, but it also prepares them for success in their chosen careers. Working in tandem with athletics and the military (army JROTC) staff, ANA faculty pay close attention to each boy’s needs and ensure each boy is provided the support he needs to achieve his post-secondary goals. We believe a boy’s family are his primary educators, and we partner with families (known as Patrons at ANA) to identify the unique needs and aspirations of each boy. We then collaborate on and implement a multi-year plan to help each boy meet and exceed those goals.
With a full spectrum of Advanced Placement and Honors courses, community college dual enrollment opportunities, all of the courses required to meet and exceed the University of California/California State University (A-G) admissions requirements, courses for students with learning differences, and courses for students who are speakers of other languages than English, ANA will help your boy become an educated man of virtue.
If I can answer any questions about our amazing academic program, please do not hesitate to reach out to me at mryan@armyandnavyacademy.org.
